It features self-inspection checklists and other safety and health resources for small to mid-sized businesses and is easy to use and well-organized. Complete checklists and add comments and photos. Checklists then categorize themselves into completed ones and ones that contain unaddressed issues. You can also favorite certain ones and share them.

The OSHA-NIOSH Small Business Safety and Health Handbook app is FREE to download from Apple’s App Store. While the checklists are intended for general industry and shouldn’t be used to assess compliance, this is a very handy tool for identifying hazards.

Whether your workplace falls under a state plan or federal OSHA requirements, everyone can benefit from using the app. None of the info is sent to OSHA; it’s just for your personal use to get organized and start improving the safety of your workplace. For more information, check out the CDC’s OSHA-NIOSH Small Business Checklist App page.

You may be required to not just post some of your establishment’s injury and illness data but also electronically submit that data to OSHA.

Find out what applies to you by consulting the BA’s Annual OSHA Injury Reporting Reminder post, which includes everything you need to know (deadlines, what to submit, and how to do so). With more collected data, OSHA can more easily protect employees and help ensure the safety of brewery workforces. Happy New Year, everyone!

Chemical Companions are handy one-pagers with information on common chemicals found in a brewery or beverage manufacturing space. Although they are no replacement for a chemical’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS), they provide application tips alongside crucial information on how to safely handle and store the chemical. One way to use them is to post them where the chemical is stored or typically dealt with. That way, the precautions are right in front of the eyes of the person actively using the chemical.

First up is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), commonly known as caustic, which presents many hazards yet can be handled safely if the dangers are well understood and accounted for.

Increase hazard communication effectiveness and awareness in your workplace with these Chemical Companions, and stay tuned for many more to come!
